Disasters Exacerbates Gender-Based Violence

Women and girls are more vulnerable during crises and disasters as they face an increased risk of discrimination, abuse, and exploitation. Emergencies, crises and disasters exacerbate existing drivers of violence, including aggravating socioeconomic and gender inequalities, deepening rigid social norms, and worsening the already existing unbalanced power structures.

Following the massive earthquakes that stroke south and southeastern Turkiye and Syria, RET teams have been working to protect and empower women in Turkiye. In collaboration with RET’s local partner, LEAP Turkiye, the RET team has been organising awareness-raising sessions on gender-based violence, highlighting protection and referral mechanisms at the national level.
